This impressive stoneware vase was handcrafted by French studio artist Michel Delmotte in 1973.
The vase features a heavy, asymmetrical, and highly textured form characteristic of the Brutalist style. It is made from dense stoneware and finished in a layered, earthy glaze with rich dark brown, beige, and mottled blue accents. The base is clearly signed "Michel Delmotte" and "Strasbourg," marking its date and origin.
Michel Delmotte is a celebrated French ceramic artist who was active in the mid-20th century. He studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg in 1956 and later became a professor there from 1972 onward, dedicating a significant part of his professional life to teaching and creating ceramics. His work is recognized for its bold, sculptural forms and deeply textured, volcanic, and lava-like glazes.
Pieces from Michel Delmotte are highly collectible and represent the best of post-war French studio ceramics.
