The Swiss ceramic artist Gustav Spörri was born in 1902 as the child of a Swiss-born potter in Zell am Harmersbach in southern Germany. After an apprenticeship as a ceramic painter, Spörri continued his education in Karlsruhe (with Max Läuger), Dresden and Vienna. He later became an art advisor and artistic director at Villeroy & Boch in Dresden, returned to Switzerland with his family in 1948 and was artistic director of Ziegler Pottery AG in Schaffhausen until 1964. At the beginning of the 1950s, Spörri built his home and studio “Trubegüetli” in Neuhausen am Rheinfall, where he began working as a freelance ceramist and artist parallel to his work in Schaffhausen. From 1965 until his death in 1976, Gustav Spörri worked exclusively in his own studio.
