This rare vintage ceramic figurine was produced by Gmundner Keramik in Austria around 1958 and depicts a seated Chinese reader holding an open book. The figurine carries form number 2278 and was designed by Stephan Dakon, the renowned Austrian sculptor and ceramic designer who created numerous figurines for Viennese manufacturers during the Mid-Century period.
This charming design is often surrounded by attribution confusion. Similar Chinese figurines are sometimes incorrectly listed as designs by Carli Bauer. Research suggests that the Carli Bauer versions were separate Viennese productions and that comparable models were later reproduced by Gmundner Keramik.
This example, however, is an authentic Gmundner Keramik production from circa 1958, as documented in Gmundner sample books.
With its expressive face, hand-painted details and vibrant colors, this figurine is a wonderful example of Austrian Mid-Century ceramics and will appeal to collectors of Gmundner Keramik, Viennese design and Mid-Century decorative art.
This figurine is in good vintage condition with normal signs of age and use. There are two small retouched chips on the hand, as shown in the photographs. Please carefully study all photographs, as they are part of the description.
